Abstract

Nowadays, More and more industry applications are involved with high temperature, high pressure, or vacuum. Customers who is new to metal seal always have a concern if metal seals can really achieve the targeting sealing effect in the corresponding working conditions.

Without doubt, in the extreme environments, metal seals have much greater design flexibility to address critical issues regarding temperature, pressure, fire safety, leak rate and process compatibility. As a result, metal seals are the only sealing solution in such environment.

Based on the support experience of customers from different industries, this article summarizes the best practices of metal seal, so that new users of metal seal can learn the mechanism of metal seals quickly.

Why need to use a Metal Seal in High Temperature?

Comparing with conventional seals like polymer or PTFE, Metal seals are made from different alloys, such as high-performance nickel alloy, like Inconel718 etc. which can suffer temperature as high as 650°C. Here, We list some Common Material Temperature Capabilities for your reference.

Why need to use a Metal Seal in Vacuum and low temperatures?

At low cryogenic temperatures and low pressures, such as vacuum seal applications, metal seals are far better than polymers since they do not become brittle and lose elasticity.

Why need to use a Metal Seal in High Pressure?

Metal Seals can be primarily used in static applications pressures as high as 500MPa. In practical, in the working pressure scope, with more seating load, the sealing effect can be much better.

Metal Seal is the best choice when medium is corrosive

Unlike rubber seals or other traditional seal products, metal seals are very highly resilient to corrosive chemicals and even intense levels of radiation. With this resilience coupled with the right material selection/coating for an application, a metal seal can be a very durable seal performing dependably year after year.

How about the sealing effect of Metal Seal?

One of the most important and critical aspects of using a metal seal is surface finish of the mating hardware.

In certain applications, higher surface finish can be negated with the help of coating applied to the metal seal. The picture below shows how coating helps navigate through the peaks and valleys of the hardware surface hence creating sealing.
