Abstract
Metal Seal is a special seal for extreme working conditions, which can be applied in high temperature, high pressure, special medium, or combinations. Different applications need different Metal Seals to achieve required sealing effect.
For all kinds of metal Seals, which limited by materials, shapes and heat treatment, there are general properties. Customer should check these general properties to determine if a metal seal can be applied in your application.

Metal Seal Selection Process
Sonkit recommend customer to collect the information following the process as below, so that a best-fit Metal seal can be chosen for your application.
Generally, to select a metal seal to fit your application, there are three aspects to consider:
Material
Metal seals are made from different alloys, such as high performance nickel alloy, Inickel718 etc. Some type metal seals are with metal plated on outer layer, like silver, gold. Different seal materials and plating metal can suffer different working conditions, include temperature and pressure.
First of all, We suggests Metal selection should consider working conditions such as temperature and pressure, and other factor like corrosion resistance and chemical compatibility should also be considered. Here, Sonkit Industry recommends the 3 questions below for Material selection:
- What’s the temperature of the application?
- What’s the medium?
- Is Corrosion resistance involved?
With all the information above, a material which can be applied to your application can be selected.

Shape
Different shapes of seals have different abilities. Some seals have very high seating load and it may not be possible to bolt the hardware down. Some shapes of seals do not have enough spring back for certain applications. To facilitate customer to choose a suitable shape a metal seal, Sonkit recommend the 4 questions below for Shape seletions.
- What’s the pre-load of the seal?
- What’s the working pressure?
- How much is the load and sping back needed?
- What’s the leakage rate should achieve?
Sonkit produces Metal Seal Type as following:
・ Metal O Ring: widely used seal type for over 50 year, which is also a economical choice for high load, high pressure application.
・ Metal C Ring: One of Most popular designs, can provide low leakage rate and high spring back.
・ Spring Energized C-Ring: Enhanced C Ring, which has an spring inside, so that can bear much greater load for rough surfaces, and also can achieve much lower leakage rate.
・ JCE: Jacket C Ring External, with Aluminum layer
・ E Ring: provide the greatest spring back among all the metal seals
・ V Ring: low load, versatile seal, widely used in Valve application, etc.
・ COI/COE: Metal Commaseal (Internal/External pressure)
Size
Seal size is determined by the dimension of groove, customer simply to provide the data of groove, Sonkit support will work out the best size of seals for you.
