The sealing performance of Metal Seals is determined by a relatively high specific contact load at the sealing line and a particular degree of resilience or spring back of the elastic metal seal.

 

The seating load and the resulting sealing line width are determined by the seal type, cross section, material, material thickness, and alloy characteristics.

 

A specific seating load will be required depending on the required tightness and the medium to be sealed. By filling up groove defects, plating or coating with a soft, ductile material will improve sealing. The ductile layer will flow and fill in the groove surface imperfections as the seating load increases.

 

Controlled compression is required for metal seals. These seals are usually fitted in a machining groove or include a retainer plate to limit compression.
